10 Pieces of Career Advice No One Tells You - TheJobNetwork

10 Pieces of Career Advice No One Tells You - TheJobNetworkIf youre job searching, youve probably heard a hr of advice from well meaning relatives, mentors, and friends. But you probably arent getting career advice from superstarsyou know those mythical people who do what they love and love what they do and really make an impact in the world? googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Keeping in mind that notlage everyone will succeed following the standard cookie-cutter job advice, and that taking a few unconventional risks just might be the smartest move for you, here are a few essential pieces of advice you probably wont get told, but that maybe you should follow.1. Job requirements are not set in stone.Yeah, yeah. Its important not to apply to anything for which you are blatantly under- or unqualified. Even so, unless the job is academic, legal, or medicalfields in which hard skills are crucially importantwhat matters is usually the value you b ring to the position and your willingness to hit the ground running. Its not common to get a hiring manager to look past their checklist of requirements, but with a little ingenuity and pluck, you just might have a shot.2. Embrace imposter syndrome.A combination of control and hard work, the feeling that youre really good at what you do, and a healthy dose of insecurity might just be the magic potion. If you constantly feel that youre not good enough at what you do, youll only push yourself to do betterand soon outpace everyone who thinks they can just sit back and go through the usual motions.3. Dont be realistic. The number one thing people are going to tell you is to be realistic. But reality is an illusion. If you dream big and work hard, you can probably accomplish the unrealisticeven the unthinkable.4. Dont pick based on numbers. So many people are picking careers these days based on average salaries or other employment statistics. Pick what you enjoy doing and strive to work re ally hard at it. You can make a good living doing almost anything if you seek to work with the top people in the field and match their pace. Picking a boring job you hate just because the numbers say its steady? Thats a sure path to burnout or boredom.5. Let your passion develop.Doing what you like doing isnt the same as slavishly following your passion only. Remember that some of the hardest-core passions develop over time. You could choose a smart career path that you like well enough, but which suits your particular skills and talents, your passion might just grow organically into something that will really set you up.6. Create a position. If your dream job isnt openor doesnt existdo some homework. Study your industry, research companies youd like to work for, find your niche and then start pitching yourself. If you can solve a companys biggest challenges or can figure out a way to show them youd be indispensable, then youre well on your way.7. Start at the top.If you just keep se nding your resume among the thousands to HR, it might take you ages to get hired. Try getting your materials in the hands of the higher-ups first. Use your network. Call in favors. Be tactful, but get yourself heard by the people who matter most at a company. When in doubt, work the decision-makers personal or administrative assistant. Build a relationship there and youll find you have a powerful ally.8. Think five years in the future.Dont just apply to every job that seems like you would like it now. Research the company, ask a few questions, and get a sense of what its like to work there. Then think yourself five years into the future. What would you actually be doing at this company or in this field, once youve worked up from entry-level? Make decisions based on that five year plan, rather than the any-job-will-do-right-now plan.9. Your babo mattersIt doesnt matter how great the company is. Your work experience will be dominated by who your boss is. Finding a good mentor you resp ect is crucial. Pick someone you can learn from, and whose inner circle you would like to aim for.10. You need more than hard skillsWhat gets you a job right out of college, or fresh in a new field, wont get you promoted to the next level. Youll need to become savvy at working office politics, at listening, at reading body language, at being an essential team member. Youll always need to keep your technical skills sharp, but these soft skills are the things that are going to take you furthest in your career.

Do Matt Lauer and Louis C.K. Deserve to Return to Work Women Answer in New Sexual Harassment Survey

Do Matt Lauer and Louis C.K. Deserve to Return to Work Women Answer in New Sexual Harassment Survey Its been two years since the watershed MeToo movement began bringing high-profile perpetrators of workplace sexual harassment to justice. And in such a relatively short window, the magnitude of change thats unfolded has truly been enormous, particularly regarding the widespread recognition of gendered power dynamics, the abuses of that power and what constitutes as acceptable workplace behavior.Or at least, it certainly feels like much has changed. But in Fairygodboss third annual survey of women on the state of sexual harassment in their lives and workplaces, it appears the trickle-down impact of MeToo has been dismally low.In the movements immediate aftermath at the end of 2017, Fairygodboss issued its first such survey, asking 500+ women to share their experiences and impressions around sexual harassment in the workplace. At the end of 2018, we conducted this survey again to get a p ulse on what, exactly, had changed. And in October 2019, our most recent survey iteration found that 61% of women say things have ultimately either remained the same or gotten worse for working women in 2019. This, despite a slight increase in the number of women who say their company has created or updated its anti-harassment policies in the past year.Download Report Sexual Harassment In the WorkplaceInterestingly, one finding that has changed in the past year is connected to womens opinion of whether high-profile, celebrity perpetrators of workplace sexual harassment, like Matt Lauer and Louis C.K., deserve to ever return to their careers. Fifty-nine percent of women said the answer to this is no, up 11% from women who said the same in 2018.Theres also been an uptick in the rate at which women are reporting experiences of sexual harassment to their companys HR. Last year, only 43% of respondents whove experienced harassment did this, and in 2019, 51% did. This greater utilizatio n of HR may be connected to a similar uptick in the number of respondents who say their harasser welches a manager or supervisor. For 2019 respondents who chose not to report their harassment, 41% said they reason they stayed silent was because the harassment came from their direct boss, up from 23% of women who said the same in 2017.What else has changed about the state of workplace sexual harassment since the birth of MeToo?
